Project Story

A dear friend approached Siryali Studios to revamp a family home located in a prime residential area in Baghdad. The row house has a narrow, linear layout with windows and light sources only at the front and back. The house holds many joyful childhood memories, still cherished by the family who wished to pass it down to their son.

Siryali’s Solution

Our design approach involved cutting an opening in the concrete slab above the stairs, removing the old tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms, and creating a wider connection between the kitchen and reception area. We also incorporated shanasheel (Iraqi-mashribiya) to ensure privacy for the kitchen when necessary. The old staircase was replaced with an open-riser staircase to create a more spacious feel and an interior garden was planted to become the focal point of the home.
